Here’s a rundown of what to look for if you’re ready to get down to the nitty-gritty of choosing a pee device.

Usability

You only get the benefits of an STP device if you can use it while fully clothed, so usability is critical when choosing one.

Let’s look at some factors that affect usability.

Shape

A urination device, such as the GoGirl, is shaped like a funnel you would use in the kitchen. Due to their orientation, it is often necessary to lower your pants to use them, defeating the purpose of the stand-to-pee device.

Others, like the pStyle and many disposables, are shaped like short gravy boats. A small, medicine spoon-type camping urination device may require more practice to reliably connect with your urethra each time, but it can also be more discreet and portable. One consideration with a smaller device is that you may need to hold urine flow somewhat to avoid spilling over.

Other designs involve multiple parts, such as a funnel and a tube, to extend the urine past the body so you don’t have to lower clothing to use them.

Material

Silicone or Paper

Softer silicone and disposable women’s urination devices are easy to fold and pack in a back pocket or bag. However, making a leak-proof connection with the body is often challenging. They also tend to collapse when pressure is applied, so navigating through tight zippers or leggings can cause accidents.

Rigid Plastic

Rigid plastic designs like the pStyle make a tighter connection with the body, so using the pStyle as a urination device means much less chance of leaks or spills.

Female urination devices usually require pulling aside or navigating through clothing. Rigid plastic doesn’t collapse against the pressure of underwear, leggings, pants, or zippers.

For many people, rigid plastic is also easier to hold in their hands.

Cleaning

Some people hesitate at the thought of putting a PUD back in their bag after using it. So, here's how to clean it before you do.

Both funnel and gravy boat designs can be rinsed with water and washed with soap and water whenever possible. Disposables are just thrown away.

A funnel-design urinating device can be more challenging to keep clean because it has an enclosed spout. You may need a pipe cleaner or equivalent tool to clean it. The same is true for multi-piece designs involving a tube.

Open funnel designs like the pStyle have no nooks and crannies to impede cleaning. The pStyle also has a very slick surface that sheds moisture easily.

Portability

A urination device — for women, trans men, or anybody — has to be genuinely portable. You can’t use it if you don’t have it with you.

Paper disposables are the easiest to carry around but have many other disadvantages.

Most STPs can be easily carried in a pocket or bag. They weigh less than a cell phone and are usually smaller than one, too.

The pStyle is unique amongst PUDs in that you can wipe with it. Pull the rounded back edge away from the body with slight upward pressure, and much of the remaining urine will be removed.

Reusability

Disposables appeal to people who have yet to get used to a stand-to-pee device and are worried about cleaning it or carrying it. While these products may work for people who only need to stand and pee a few times a year, they don’t work as well as a reusable design like the pStyle.

Cleaning and carrying a reusable product is worth the greatly improved usability if you plan to use it semi-regularly or more often. In addition, you cut down on paper waste.
